At just 130-square feet, this handcrafted shepherd’s hut in rural Romania is one of the smallest homes we've stayed in—and also one of the most memorable.
Located in the remote Szekler village of Hilib in Transylvania, the tiny retreat measures approximately 7 feet wide by 18.5 feet long and sits on an iron trailer. Its curved roof, wooden details, and wagon-inspired exterior give it the character of a traditional Vardo, while the interior has been adapted with everything needed for a comfortable modern stay.
We spent two nights here surrounded by the quiet Romanian countryside, and the experience was a great reminder of just how functional a genuinely tiny footprint can be. There's a queen-size bed on the main level, a surprisingly capable kitchenette, a clever fold-away dining table, storage, and even a private bathroom with a shower—all without a sleeping loft.
Outside, a private orchard, terrace, fire pit, and wood-fired hot tub make the property feel considerably larger than the hut itself. The Airbnb is designed for two guests and specifically marketed as a peaceful escape surrounded by fresh mountain air and nature. 🚪 Stepping Inside
One of my favorite details appears before you even fully step inside: the Dutch door.
The bottom half functions like a conventional door, while the upper section can swing open independently and hook against the exterior. Leaving the top open brings fresh air and natural light into the hut while creating a surprisingly strong connection with the orchard outside.
Once inside, the entire layout is essentially one long room, with the kitchen near the entrance, sleeping area toward the opposite end, and bathroom tucked behind its own door.
Considering the hut is only about seven feet wide, the interior never felt as cramped as you might expect. Keeping the sleeping area downstairs also helps; there aren't any bulky stairs or ladders consuming valuable floor space.
🍳 Kitchen
Immediately beside the entrance is a compact but impressively functional kitchenette.
Butcher-block countertops provide prep space, while a small but deep sink handles cleanup. There's a two-burner induction cooktop and convection oven, so you're not limited to cold meals or eating out during your stay.
The Airbnb also provides a Nespresso machine and complimentary coffee—a particularly nice addition when you can open the Dutch door and enjoy your first cup overlooking the countryside.
Instead of filling the walls with overhead cabinetry, the kitchen relies primarily on drawers and deep lower cabinets. A simple open shelf above provides easy access to mugs, glasses, and other frequently used items.
It's basic compared with a full-size kitchen, but for a 130-square-foot vacation rental, we had everything we needed.
🍽️ Hidden Dining Table
One of the cleverest uses of space is something you might completely miss at first glance.
A panel built into the cabinetry folds upward to become a small dining table for two. A support slides underneath to hold it in place, with a built-in seat on one side and a movable stool on the other.
Once you're finished eating, the entire table folds back into the cabinetry and essentially disappears.
In a space this small, we love seeing features like this. Instead of permanently dedicating several square feet to a dining table that's only used a few times each day, the same area can remain open when you don't need it.
🛏️ Sleeping Area
Despite the hut's tiny dimensions, there's a queen-size bed right on the main floor.
That was a major plus for us. Rather than squeezing the bed into a cramped loft, the layout keeps everything on one level, making it much easier to get in and out of bed.
A wall-mounted heater keeps the interior comfortable during colder weather, while the wood finishes and curved ceiling give the sleeping area a cozy, cabin-like atmosphere.
There's also a substantial storage drawer nearby along with a wardrobe and coat hooks, providing places to unpack clothing and smaller belongings rather than living entirely out of a suitcase.
🚿 Bathroom
The fact that a full private bathroom fits inside a 130-square-foot wagon is impressive on its own.
It's understandably compact, but it includes all of the necessities: a toilet, small vanity with storage underneath, and a corner shower with both a rainfall shower head and handheld sprayer.
There's also a heated towel rack, one of those small features we grew to appreciate while traveling around Europe.
The bathroom isn't oversized or luxurious, but that's almost beside the point. Having a completely private shower and toilet within such a tiny footprint makes the hut considerably more comfortable than many similarly sized glamping accommodations.
🌳 Private Orchard & Outdoor Living
The outdoor space is where this little home really expands.
The shepherd's hut sits within its own fully fenced private orchard, with fruit trees scattered throughout the yard. The listing includes on-site parking, and the secluded setting helps create a genuine sense of escaping into the Transylvanian countryside.
A small terrace provides space for outdoor dining and relaxing, while a fireplace/grill and supplied firewood make it easy to cook or spend an evening outside.
And then there's arguably the best amenity of all: the private wood-fired hot tub.
The hot tub is available exclusively to guests throughout the stay, and the Airbnb listing specifically highlights it as one of the property's defining features. Sitting in the warm water surrounded by the quiet countryside adds a completely different dimension to staying in such a tiny home.
✨ Final Thoughts
At approximately 130-square feet, this Transylvanian shepherd's hut doesn't have room to waste—and that's exactly what makes its design so interesting.
The fold-away dining table is probably our favorite space-saving idea, but the entire interior makes smart use of its narrow footprint. You get a functional kitchenette, queen-size bed, wardrobe, storage, heating, and a complete bathroom without needing to climb into a loft.
For full-time living, 130 square feet would obviously require some major compromises. As a romantic getaway for two, however, the smaller footprint becomes part of the experience—especially when so much additional living space is available outdoors.
The private orchard, terrace, fire pit, grill, and wood-fired hot tub allow you to spend much of your stay outside, while the hut itself becomes a cozy place to cook, sleep, and warm up at the end of the day. The Airbnb currently holds a 4.97/5 rating from 63 reviews, with guests particularly mentioning the hot tub, hospitality, quiet setting, and outdoor spaces.
After spending two nights here ourselves, what stuck with us most was how complete the interior felt despite being one of the smallest spaces we've toured. It doesn't try to fit a conventional house into 130 square feet. Instead, every feature earns its place.
